Moventas’ jack-up solution for marine industry and hybrid drive with torque motor interested the visitors at the Hannover Fair last week.

Drive solutions in marine industry usually involve sophisticated tasks with complex and weather-dependent operating conditions.  All applications must be certified by independent classification agencies.

Drives for raising and lowering Wind Turbine Installation Vessels (WTIV) and jack-up rigs are a perfect example of the high availability and operational reliability demands. Jack-ups are used for instance in depths of up to 75 meters for the assembly of off-shore wind turbines and exploring of oil fields.

Moventas planet gears are well suited for marine applications and especially for lift boats, characterized by their compact size and design. In particular jack-up speed combined with high load cycles is crucial for the WTIV. The Jack-up drives have been developed in accordance with the latest scientific knowledge and in close cooperation with the American customer EBI and ABS as classification agency.

In addition to jack-up solutions Moventas presented the results of an interesting R&D project in Hannover. Moventas and Oswald-Elektromotoren have in close cooperation developed a concept study for a hybrid drive. High torque together with cost efficient operation is getting more and more important in heavy-duty applications. Torque  motors - also  known  as  permanent  magnet  motors -  provide better  efficiency  rates, lower inertias and higher dynamic. 

“The concept study shows that the higher investment could be paid back within four years. The hybrid solution is especially recommended for applications with variable speed and high requested drive dynamic”, says Gerwin Klaner, Managing Director of Moventas GmbH.
