October 01, 2007 Jykes Kiinteistöt signs a contract to build Moventas' wind turbine gear facilityProperty company Jykes Kiinteistöt Oy, which is owned by a number of municipalities, has won the contract to build Moventas Oy's new wind turbine gear facility in Etelä-Keljo, Jyväskylä. Moventas and Jykes Kiinteistöt signed a cooperation agreement concerning the large-scale construction project on Thursday, September 27, 2007. The facility will double wind turbine and industrial gear manufacturer Moventas' production capacity of wind turbine gears in Central Finland. The facility is the largest single industrial investment project in Central Finland in recent history. Jykes Kiinteistöt will act as the owner and main contractor of the facility. Moventas will take over the facilities under a long-term lease. The new manufacturing facility will be situated south of Jyväskylä. The facility will have 16,200 square meters of space. Once the building is finished, the 6.2 hectare plot will still have additional building rights for 15,000 square meters, in case the facility needs to be enlarged. The cost estimate for the facility is 30 million euros. Moventas' machinery and equipment investments total 80 million euros. Half of this money is being spent in the new factory. "Due to the large demand, we are increasing our production capacity and strengthening our market position. Our core competence is situated in Finland, which makes it natural to develop our operations here," says Moventas' President and CEO Ilkka Hakala. Operations in the new facility will start at the beginning of October 2008. Groundwork in the area is already in progress. "The building schedule is challenging. Carrying out the project according to schedule is critical to our operations. It is extremely important that cooperation between partners partaking in the project is successful," Hakala emphasizes. Jykes Kiinteistöt acquired the plot from the City of Jyväskylä. The city has also had a significant role in guaranteeing the loans for the building project. "Investments by Moventas support the current structure of know-how and education in the region. They also strengthen industry in the area. A significant number of jobs will be created in the area. At the same time, Moventas' network of subcontractors will be reinforced and sprout new businesses. This is a major investment in industry and high technology," says Mayor of Jyväskylä Markku Andersson. In addition to Jyväskylä, Moventas has operations in Karkkila and Parkano as well as in Germany, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Singapore and China. Moventas employs around 1,000 people, of which 400 work in wind turbine gear production in Jyväskylä.
