June 05, 2008 Moventas’ new factory is reaching the roofing celebration stageThe roofing celebration for Moventas’ new factory will take place on 6 June. The factory is located in Etelä-Keljo, Jyväskylä, Finland. Moventas produces wind turbine gears and industrial gears, and the new factory, which building construction will be finished in October, will constitute the largest single industrial investment in the recent history of Central Finland. The factory’s production facilities and office spaces have been tailored according to Moventas’ needs. The overall cost estimate of the building totals over EUR 30 million. Jykes Kiinteistöt, a property company owned by a number of municipalities, is the owner and developer of the factory. “The cooperation with Jykes Kiinteistöt has proceeded well. We find it very important that the construction schedule is followed so that we are able to meet the demand of the quickly increasing market and fulfill our customer promise,” says Ilkka Hakala, President and CEO of Moventas. Reaching full production capacity step by step The new factory will double Moventas’ wind turbine gear production in Central Finland. Moventas has invested a total of EUR 80 million in equipment and machinery procurement, part of which will be allocated to the Rautpohja factory. The full capacity of the factory will be available at the beginning of 2010. On an annual basis, the factory will assemble gears for one thousand 2-3MW wind turbines. Furthermore, Moventas’ planet wheel production will be centralized to the new factory: these key components are manufactured annually for approximately 2,700 wind turbine gears. “About 600 gears will be assembled at the factory next year. The factory will also provide the surface treatment and final equipping for approximately 1,100 wind turbine gears produced by Moventas’ Rautpohja factory. The gears will be delivered to turbine manufacturers in Europe and North America, and all around the globe from there,” says Hakala. At the beginning of 2009, approximately 100 people will work with the production, and the number of personnel will increase to 200 by year-end. Moventas is one of the four major players in the global wind turbine gear industry. The investments made by Moventas are an example of the quick growth rate of wind power business. The amount of new wind power capacity installed last year was 30 per cent higher than in 2006. “According to the latest forecasts, the wind power capacity installed will double during the next two years,” says Hakala.
