To achieve the highest levels of reliability, Moventas has carefully studied the operating conditions of wind turbine gears. For example, climatic conditions are taken into account as early as the design phase: cold makes metal brittle and increases the viscosity of lubrication oil in the gear unit, whereas heat imposes considerable demands on the thermal capacity of the drive units.
Understanding gearbox behaviour under both static and dynamic loading conditions is of major importance. Thorough analysis of tooth contact in all loading conditions is the basis for reliability. In wind turbine applications, prediction of the dynamic behaviour of the meshes is of great importance. Understanding extreme loads is also required to achieve extreme reliability.
In-depth knowledge of the behaviour of wind turbine gears is achieved by field measurements and prototype tests in Moventas’ modern testing facilities of up to six megawatt class. |
